Artist Osang Gwon creates sculpture from photography.
He recently opened the exhibit Furniture,
with the theme of “free variations of sculpture, aspiring to new horizons in sculpture.”
We wondered what characterized beauty in furniture, in his gaze.
We asked artist Osang Gwon his “Best 5” list of furniture, based on his personal taste.

Please tell us the “Best 5” of beautiful furniture, according to your personal taste.

I love the clean simplicity of Judd’s works. He is famous as an artist who creates clear arrangements of form. A while ago,
I saw Donald Judd’s table up for auction at Phillips (one of the world’s top three art auction houses).
It was not personally made by Judd; it was a limited release reproduction made in 2012.
It was sold for a reasonable price of 5,000 USD, and this seemed like an item worth acquiring.

Of all the tables in the world, I love this table by Giacometti the most.
His elder brother Alberto Giacometti must have influenced this designer; the shapes of Diego’s tables seem reminiscent of his brother’s sculptures.
Diego’s furniture is sentimental yet fun, which is what I find attractive about them.

Joep Van Lieshout, a Northern European sculptor, established a studio called Atelier Van Lieshout.
Van Lieshout creates sculpture, installations, buildings,
and furniture: his oeuvre spans art, design, and architecture.
I like this wooden chair designed with a straight span of wood.
I find the long lines of the walnut very stylish.
I heard that this was part of a project in which Van Lieshout
set out to make one chair a day in the Netherlands.

Tom Sachs is an architect and sculptor whose career spans three decades.
In 2017, he first launched a collection of commercial furniture.
I was very impressed by “shop chair,” one of these mass-produced works.
The rubber flex seat and stainless-steel screws assemble completely with the maple board
– it is a unique design for an assembled chair.
Sachs also made a mark in the history of sneakers with his collaboration with Nike on Mars Yard 2.0. (Laughter)

I love all the work of designer Gwang-ho Lee, but I found the marble stool the most memorable.
Marble is a material that as a sculptor I have deep attachment to.
Designer Gwang-ho Lee uses a wide variety of materials,
but this small marble stool struck me as impressive as a work of marble sculpture when it was first released.
